I can't believe I'm blogging about a book, but hey, there's a first time for everything right?
Did anyone think the main character in Catcher in the Rye believes he can't get anything accomplished? He's a good character, really, but he's a little depressing...
The book so far is really interesting, especially because of Holden's 'character relationships' with Ackley and his roommate. Ackley is such a funny character but a little obnoxious, especially when he comes into Holden's room when Holden is reading.
If Holden's brother was still alive, he would make a GREAT character...did anyone else think that? I thought the baseball mitt with poems in green writing was somewhat incongruous with Holden's character and thus showed Holden's soft side, especially when he was talking about showing Allie's mitt to Jane and opening up to her. It was kind of sad and unexpected when Jane did not open up to Holden when she was crying about some family issue. I as a reader thought that was a letdown because Jane's character would be more interesting to explore...
What else can I blog about?? Anyone have any prediiiictions for the rest of the book? 'Cuz I can't see where this book about an expelled high school student who wants to be of legal drinking age is going!!!!
someone reply to my post or this blog is going to get really boring reaaallllly fast. =D.

I agree that Ackley was a little obnoxious, but I still think Holden was unfair to him when he was talking to him just before he left Pencey. Allie would have been a great character to bring in, as would Holden's little sister Phoebe - maybe Salinger brings her in in the second half of the book. I do agree that it is pretty lame that Holden, a minor, is running around, smoking and drinking and doing something else. But hopefully this book will improve as the story unfolds!
Blogfrog: First, I want to say, that you have an incredible way of seeing the story. I for one, thought that the book was a total bore, and never really had any meaning throughout the novel. But, I can definitly agree with the fact that Allie would have been a great character. He seemed like Holden's only inspiration to be a good student, and to achieve in life. Since there no longer is an Allie, it makes sence that Holden is the way he is, a misanthrope.
You have such an amazing way of looking at the book. It's really interesting to see your point of view. I also wanted to say, I found the book really interesting and happening at first and then everything seemed to go downhill from there. Then you said that all he wants to do is be of the legal age limit so that he can drink and drink. This is totally true! I'm currently reading the second half of the book and that is ALL he seems to want to do! He even tells us that he has gray hairs. It's like almost as if he's trying to be retarded on purpose. He also smokes like a chainsaw and I feel that personal pleasure out of smoking is not the only reason he does it. I think he does it for attention and because he wants people to THINK that he's a lot older than 17. He just tries too hard for my liking. So, after reading more than the first half, I have changed my opinion! He's the phony!
